Ministry of Industry Welcomes President Prabowo's Call to Accelerate National Industrialization

The Ministry of Industry welcomed President Prabowo Subianto's speech at the DPR Plenary Session, which emphasized the importance of accelerating national industrialization so that Indonesia can produce its own strategic needs, from motor vehicles to electronic products. The President stressed that Indonesia must strengthen its national manufacturing capacity and not merely be a market for imported products.

Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the President's direction is in line with the New National Industrialization Strategy (SBIN) agenda initiated by Kemenperin to strengthen the structure of the national manufacturing industry, increase added value and create quality jobs.

“The President's speech affirms that industrialization is the main path toward national economic self-reliance. Indonesia must not merely be a consumer, but must become a producer country with strong and globally competitive manufacturing capabilities,” the Minister of Industry said in Jakarta on Wednesday (20/5).

The Minister of Industry added that the development of national industrialization should be directed at natural resource-based industries capable of producing high value-added derivative products. In his view, Indonesia's natural resource strengths must be the foundation for strengthening the national industrial chain from upstream to downstream.

“The President's direction is excellent, because that is exactly what we hope for. So now we must develop industrialization based on natural resources, because the strength of our natural resources can produce derivative products that in turn will strengthen the chain of national industry itself,” Agus said.

The Minister of Industry explained that when the President said Indonesia will in future be able to produce its own national car, this is highly relevant to the national industrialization agenda the government is strengthening.

“If we talk about batteries, for example, they should also be an advantage for Indonesia, because we are the world's largest nickel producer, as well as other automotive components that result from the downstreaming of upstream products,” he said.

According to Agus, the President's statement will further strengthen the optimism and spirit of national industry players to move quickly in responding to global challenges while strengthening the competitiveness of domestic industry.

“So I think what the President said is excellent, and it will add to the strength and spirit of industries in Indonesia to move quickly, to be able to answer the challenge that has been put to the government and industry players,” he added.

The Minister of Industry explained that the manufacturing sector has proven to be the backbone of the national economy. In Q1 2026, the non-oil and gas manufacturing industry grew by 5.04 percent (year-on-year) and made the largest contribution to national GDP at 19.07 percent. The manufacturing sector's contribution to national economic growth reached 1.03 percent, the highest of any sector.

According to Agus, strengthening national industrialization must continue to be spurred through pro-industry policies, including increasing the use of domestic products (P3DN), strengthening TKDN, industrial downstreaming, developing industrial human resources, and financing and investment support for the manufacturing sector.

“We appreciate President Prabowo's commitment to making industrialization a national development priority. Support for the manufacturing industry will strengthen the resilience of Indonesia's economy while opening up opportunities for greater job creation,” he said.

The Minister of Industry also considers the President's direction for Indonesia to produce its own vehicles and technology products an important momentum to accelerate the mastery of technology and the development of the national industrial ecosystem, including the automotive and electronics industries as well as innovation- and research-based industries.

Indonesia now has strong automotive industry capacity and has become a vehicle production base in the ASEAN region. Various Indonesian-made automotive products have also penetrated global export markets. In addition, the national electronics industry continues to grow through increased investment and stronger domestic supply chains.

“We have a large domestic market, competitive human resources and strong investment potential. These must be used to accelerate Indonesia's transformation into an advanced industrial country,” the Minister of Industry stressed.

Kemenperin is optimistic that, with synergy between government, industry, financial institutions, academics and the public, the national industrialization targets set out by the President can be achieved gradually and sustainably.

In his speech, President Prabowo emphasized the importance of accelerating national industrialization so that Indonesia can produce its own motorcycles, cars and even televisions, with development financing support through Danantara.
