Toward Clothing Sovereignty, Ministry of Industry: Product Quality Must Be Assured

The government remains committed to realizing national clothing sovereignty, in line with President Joko Widodo's direction in the National Proud of Made in Indonesia Movement (BBI). The aim is to always use the best products made by Indonesians and to act as an economic buffer against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Given the large potential demand for textile and textile products (TPT), the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) held technical guidance for 400 civil servants from Sabang to Merauke on techniques for setting fabric specifications for official uniforms.

The activity was organized by a work unit under the Agency for Industrial Standardization and Services Policy (BSKJI), the Center for Textile Industrial Standardization and Services (BBSPJIT), in cooperation with the Bureau of Organization and Governance of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

In his remarks, the Head of BSKJI Kemenperin, Doddy Rahadi, said achieving clothing sovereignty requires attention to its driving factors, namely assured clothing product quality through the use and application of standardization, which must become a culture in every activity of the national TPT industry to compete in domestic and global markets.

“Kemenperin's concrete support includes optimizing the Increased Use of Domestic Products (P3DN) program, preparing the Apparel Park integrated industrial estate, and developing a material center and the Indonesian Smart Textile Industry Hub (ISTIH) digital platform,” Doddy said in Jakarta on Monday (14/3).

On P3DN, Doddy explained that applying the domestic component level (TKDN) to every product, especially in government procurement, will have a big impact on the domestic economy.

“Meanwhile, the standardization and technical specifications of fabric for uniforms can be adapted to their function and working environment. One quality reference that can be used is the Indonesian National Standard (SNI),” he said.

To this end, BBSPJIT has the competence to meet needs for assessing uniform fabric quality, both under technical regulations in regional governments and special uniform fabric quality standards not yet available but needed by other stakeholders such as ministries/agencies, state- and region-owned enterprises, the TNI and POLRI.

“We encourage every BSKJI work unit across Indonesia to always provide solution-oriented, professional services for industry and the public. For textile products, please use the industrial services at BBSPJIT. Besides its strategic location, it has accurate testing laboratory facilities, a Product Certification Body and competent human resources in textiles,” Doddy said.
