Ministry of Industry Launches the 2022 Green Industry Awards

The Ministry of Industry is determined to keep boosting national industrial competitiveness by creating environmentally friendly, sustainable industries, including by applying the green economy concept toward a low-carbon economy while maintaining high economic growth.

“The green economy is an economic system that seeks to improve human well-being and social equity while significantly reducing environmental risks and ecological scarcity, and is low-carbon, resource-efficient and socially inclusive,” Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said at the Launch of the 2022 Green Industry Awards in Jakarta on Wednesday (6/4).

The Minister said implementing the green economy is in line with one of the main issues on Indonesia's G20 Presidency agenda, sustainable energy transition. “Delegates and representatives of international institutions accepted proposals Indonesia presented in the Trade, Investment and Industry Working Group (TIIWG), including on the environment,” he said.

The first Energy Transition Working Group meeting (ETWG-1), part of Indonesia's G20 Presidency agenda, will also be held. “ETWG-1 discussions cover three priority issues for sustainable energy transition: global energy security, securing energy accessibility, and smart and clean energy technologies scaling up,” he added.

The Minister added that the low carbon development (LCD) policy, also called low-carbon development (PRK), is a national priority aimed at sustaining economic and social growth through low greenhouse gas (GHG) emission development and minimizing exploitation of natural resources.

Green Industry Awards

To realize the green economy and achieve low-carbon development targets, Kemenperin has made various strategic efforts, such as holding the Green Industry Awards regularly since 2010, drafting Green Industry Standards, reducing GHG emissions, and implementing carbon economic value under Presidential Regulation No. 98 of 2021.

Kemenperin also promotes industrial waste management, circular economy development, and the development of electric vehicle production and use.

The Green Industry Awards recognize industrial companies that have applied green industry principles in their production processes, aiming to motivate industry to apply these principles.

“The Green Industry Awards will be held for the 12th time in 2022. In 2021, 152 companies took part. In my view, this number is still relatively small. We hope industry players will soon be called to take part,” the Minister stressed.

He added that participating companies are expected to improve their performance to obtain higher-level green industry awards.

“Based on data from the 152 participating companies in the 2021 Green Industry Awards, energy savings reached IDR 3.2 trillion and water savings IDR 169 billion,” the Minister said. As of 2021, 44 manufacturers have been certified to Green Industry Standards.

In addition, under the GHG emission reduction program, verified results for the 2021 reporting year show emissions reductions of up to 2,730,564.26 tons CO2e through 2020, or 99.3% of the industrial sector's 2030 NDC target (2.75 million tons CO2e).

“Through the Green Industry Awards, Kemenperin hopes to achieve its 2030 green industry development targets, ultimately improving industrial competitiveness, natural resource efficiency, reduced pollution and meeting national program targets,” Agus said.

On the same occasion, the Head of the Agency for Industrial Standardization and Services Policy (BSKJI), Doddy Rahadi, explained that the 12th Green Industry Awards in 2022 will run for seven months. “Starting with the launch in April and ending with the Green Industry Awards ceremony in November for industrial companies that have applied green industry principles sustainably,” he said.

The Green Industry Awards stages comprise the launch, registration, verification and assessment, an objection period, the Advisory Board meeting, and the Green Industry Awards ceremony

According to Doddy, the decision on Green Industry Awards is made by an Advisory Board of government, universities, environmental observers and experts, tasked with reviewing and giving input on the technical team's assessment of industrial companies.

Doddy explained that from 2022, registration, assessment and objections for the green industry awards are done online through SIINas (https://siinas.kemenperin.go.id/).
